Some chief executives discuss how they make difficult decisions, others how they manage conflict, start their day, show up in the office – and switch off when they get home.

All the chief executives who talk to AFR BOSS editor Sally Patten on a new podcast, 15 Minutes with the Boss, offer great insights into how they rose to the top of corporate Australia and how they lead large teams.

Hear stories of success and failure and everything in between on the AFR’s newest podcast offering starting on Tuesday, September 26. Follow wherever you get your podcasts, or on Apple or Spotify.

In episode 1, Alexis George, chief executive of financial services company AMP, reveals the best piece of career advice she has been given.

It was early in her career, George had moved back to Australia after travelling offshore and landed a job as a bank reconciliation clerk. Her last role had been a senior manager at Price Waterhouse, and she was aggrieved. Her new job was a big comedown.

A friend gave George some useful advice: “You have two choices. You become the best bank reconciliation clerk you can be, or you get out.”

George recalls: “What I learnt from that [was] always do the best you can. If you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, get out.”

George also talks about the changes that might be in store for AMP and business more broadly from ChatGPT, how she delivers bad news and her favourite podcasts.
